Goals and Objectives

of the

Williamsburg Main Street Program

The Williamsburg Main Street Program strives to enhance all areas of our downtown by promoting commerce and activity while preserving the history of our past and creating a better quality of life for our residents and visitors.

As a designated State and National Main Street Program, Williamsburg Renaissance follows a Four Point Approach towards downtown revitalization as initiated by the Nation Trust for Historic Preservation.

The Williamsburg Renaissance Program continually works toward its ongoing mission to create a more vital, welcoming and thriving community through the following:

  • Promoting a positive image for the downtown area.
  • Improving a stronger climate for economic growth.
  • Strengthening public participation in the downtown area.
  • Stimulating downtown revitalization and historic preservation.
  • Educating residents and visitors as to downtown's role in the life of the community.
  • Preserving the historical, architectural and cultural resources in the downtown area.

There was a day when the nine-feet-wide sidewalks of downtown Williamsburg couldn’t meet the need. Shoppers and talkers poured out onto Main Street, making their rounds around downtown from the moment breakfast ended ‘til the dinner bell rang--with weather permitting, of course . Without doubt, downtown Williamsburg was where the community came together.

Today, Williamsburg’s Main Street Program is working hard to restore the area’s former glory and bring our local citizens and tourist alike back to downtown Williamsburg.
